AT for Young Children (2024)

Assistive Technology, or AT, refers to items, devices or adaptations that enable a child with a disability to actively participate in their world.

AT can help them play independently with toys or with other children, communicate their needs and ideas, make choices, and move around on their own.

AT for young children often involves simple adaptations such as helping a child sit by building support into their highchair with towels or making a book easier to look at by putting spacers between the pages. It can also include more sophisticated technology such as electronic communication or complex mobility devices. AT also includes services designed to help families and caregivers learn how to help a child benefit from the use of assistive technology.

If you know a child and family who you think could benefit from assistive technology, contact us to find your local AT consultant.

To learn more, view the presentation below which will give you an overview of assistive technology in early intervention.
