Gary Ray Ragan Obituary 2024 - Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor (2024)

Gary Ray Ragan, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully next to the love of his life on June 18, 2024.

He was born in Liberty, TX to Henry William (Sonny) and Bertie Mae Ragan on June 28th 1957. He spent his youngest years in Devers, TX and later graduated High School in 1976 from Groveton, TX. He called Vidor, TX his home for most of his life Gary's most treasured possession was his family. The legacy of love he had for his wife, Charlotte Ragan will forever be a tale for the ages. With that love they raised five strong daughters and he guided the family with persistent strength and hard work that provided a beautiful life. Together, they raised a beautiful family and were blessed with five children Tammie, Jenna, Kim, Kayla, and Randi. Gary was a proud father and grandfather and cherished his role in their lives.

One of Gary's favorite pastimes was hunting with his girls and grandchildren. As a young man he spent most of his time running the roads and woods with his siblings. Being very proficient at riding a dirt bike, there wasn't much of Liberty county that he didn't explore. Later in life The Piney Bottom woods held a special place in Gary's heart. He taught many how to appreciate the outdoors and just to be still and take in all of nature's beauty. Instilling in his children the strength it takes to be brave in the unknown.

He had many passions, being on a beach with the love of his life, cheering on the Astros and Crappie fishing were a few. Although many would say that he had an unwavering passion for working hard and “playing” on heavy equipment of any kind. He started running machines around the age of 12 and was incredibly capable. He found great satisfaction in a job well done.

Most don't know it, but when you drive over bridges on IH-10, you are driving over his work. He had a unique talent for large crane work and had a big hand in the road construction projects while providing for his family.

When he graduated high school, he went on the road with a band. He had an unmatched love for music. His musical legacy will live on through any one that spent time with him. He was always sharing new artists and assigning songs that matched each of his loved ones. Music was a way of communication for him. As was dancing to the music he loved (no dancefloor required). He was also in a band in Chad, Africa. He spent 12 years working in Africa and not only was he held in the highest regards with his employees and the locals, “Master Ragan” also provided them with evening entertainment when the working day was done. Gary was very prideful of his work in Africa and all of the jobs he was blessed to have throughout his wonderful life. He was respected and it showed in the bonds and friendships that were formed at the jobsite.

Gary's battle with cancer started in 2009 and it never slowed him down. Throughout his battle he was told many times that he was a miracle and that he should slow down. He would just reply with “life goes on”. His wife was his greatest warrior and walked step by step with him.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents Henry William and Bertie Mae.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Charlotte Ragan. His children, Tammie (James), Jenna, Kim, Kayla (William), Randi (Phillip) and Wayne (Chris). His grandchildren Ragan, Payton, Zoey, Blain, Charly, Walker, Lettie, Lincoln and Avery. His Siblings, Tom(Chris), Bill(Cricket), and Charlotte(Hap) and their children. As well as countless “adoptive” children and numerous friends.

He defied all the odds and impacted the lives of those around him, especially as a devoted father, grandfather and husband. He had a superpower for working hard and never giving up, never shying away from any task or challenge. His belief in God provided him with strength and guidance throughout his life. He is walking in the heavens with his Maker looking down on us now.

He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on forever in the hearts of those he touched. In honoring Gary's life, his family and friends will be celebrating him and his beautiful life. To uphold his wishes for a celebration instead of a traditional funeral, we will be donning Hawaiian attire and playing some of his favorite songs.
