All those beautiful decks have to occasionally be power washed and re-stained. What a back breaking job. But it does look nice when done.

But then if you can get your husband to do the decks, you can volunteer to clean the pool and then test it to make sure it's OK. :smiley40: No one said that life was fair.

We don't live at the beach but ours has to be powerwashed and stained occasionally too. Actually, we just finished staining ours tonight! It was looking pretty rough but now looks very pretty. I think I would rather have the pool testing job

ugggg......had to pressure wash our deck at home a couple of weeks back, but it is not nearly the size of your typical OBX deck. That has got to be one heck of a job................and I'm not even mentioning the staining part. Good Luck!

I can't even imagine having to tend to all the decks that OBX houses have! Our little porch that my husband does is back breaking enough for him!

Yep Jimmy, I've become the painter, landscaper and cabana/pool boy all in one fell swoop. But I love it and I have a great carpenter team to assist me when needed (Hatteras Bound and Dan). But then again....I am NOT retired so it's like a part time job!Bobby

Jimmy.....thought I might be the only person who stains using a brush....nice to see someone else doing it correctly. I don't care who what folks say, it is impossible to get total coverage by rolling or using a sprayer. I do my deck at home every year.....power wash then Australian Timber Oil....looks like new and its 12 years old.

All I know is this past winter had to be the worst for my deck. Its never been that dirty before in the 10 years its been there. Places will need to be done a 2nd time, I've never had to do it 2X. I've had the idea to stain it, then I thought about & said "I'll be how old when it needs stained again" and changed that idea. I'll seal it again and be done.

JimmyZ, Your post made me laugh out loud...my wonderful wife of 41 years just said to me a few minutes ago.....when are you going to get off the computer and power wash the decks like you said you were going to do this morning so we can go to the beach this afternoon.....I guess that time is now!

I have that chore to look forward to when I get home. Almost got 1 deck totally power washed before we left. At least I get to be outside in the sunshine while I'm slaving away!!

There is a school of thought that staining/sealing your deck is not cost effective. Leave the deck un-treated and you will likely have to replace a few boards within about 12-15 years vs the cost of treating the deck every one to two years for the same period. Even if you do the work yourself, you are probably better off not putting anything on your deck, but if you insist, call me.

Someone had to make sure the water was safe so poor Jimmy could cool off after all his hard work. I only hope she stayed in long enough to thoroughly test it.
